3-chapter campaign · the Saltmere Reach
The Tide-Bell of the Reach
A nine-year-old lighthouse keeper, a bell that has stopped ringing, and a coast that lives by the tide: three connected chapters played across three evenings.
Ages 6–12 across all three chapters · gentle and adventurous. A rising tide, a grumpy crab, a flock of thieving gulls and a frightened young sea creature: nobody is hurt badly, nothing has to be beaten, and kindness or cleverness settles every chapter as well as courage does.
The Saltlight's tide-bell tells the whole Saltmere Reach when the water turns. This week it rang at the wrong times, then not at all, and boats are being caught by the tide. Its keeper, nine-year-old Tilly Brack, asks the party to help her make it ring true again.
Recurring character
Tilly Brack
Nine years old, bossy, brave and secretly scared. She can read a tide-table better than any grown-up in the Reach. How the party treats the creatures they meet along the way decides how they make the bell sing in Chapter 3.
Carried forward
The Chapel's Tide Chart
Found in Chapter 1 and carried to the end: the bell-founder's own chart of the tides. It leads the party to the bell's lost clapper in Chapter 2, and together the two bring the bell home in Chapter 3.
The journey
- Chapter 1 The Bell in the Drowned Chapel The tide-bell has gone wrong, and the only chart that can set it right is in a chapel the sea sits in twice a day. Play this chapter
- Chapter 2 Two Hours at the Wracks Two hours of low water, a mudflat full of old ships, and one bell clapper somewhere in the mud. Play this chapter
- Chapter 3 The Keeper of the Saltlight The bell has been carried off to Cormorant Isle by something big and frightened. Row out, and bring it home. Play this chapter
